Featured Artist of VFH2020: Jazmine Cabulana

A lot of people look at art as a mode of bringing calm to the senses, study shows that art can be used as a therapy. While, many people think that art is one of the best free time hobbies to go for. Let us look at one of the artists who think the later is where she inclines more.

Let us meet Jazmine Cabaluna, she is an energetic high schooler from Canada. she is developing Taekwondo and Art as her main hobbies along with her studies of junior high school. She started basic drawing with crayons like every other kid in her childhood and as time passed, her studies kept her busy in school work and readings. The drawing activity she started as a kid got pushed aside and the creativity of art faded away while growing up.

Pandemic brought a lot of uncertainty and panic for entire world; everyone was wondering what’s going to happen next. And in this time of uncertainty, somehow, she found her way back to art. Whenever she had time on hand, she used it to draw and doodle. She spent half an hour almost everyday for doing something creative. But she considered it just a way to keep herself engaged in something different and after doing this for some time, she realized that it also became the mode which gave her own freedom of expressing thoughts. But as she kept on doing it, soon, the autonomy of doing this again and again bored her. Whenever she came across any art competitions, she quickly got excited to get into participating because it inspired her to create something and challenged her intellectual to use her artistic skills.

Jazmine falls for variety and thrives in challenging situations. The theme ‘Disability’ in the VOSAP Art from Heart, 2020 was enough to tickle her artistic side. Inspired by the concept, she expressed in her own words, by saying “You still have free means to draw but it gives a foundation on which you can build on and gets judged as to how strong that building is”, After being part of this competition, she got more curious to learn about different styles and try different themes in the artform. The hobby which she started merely as pass time, now she prefers to spend time with her paint brushes more than ever.

When asked about the time duration it took her to come up with a concept or idea for an art piece, she shared that it takes her about a week, when it comes to something like this, she often likes to dig deeper into research and educate herself on the topic or the theme in order to understand the subject. Once she has the necessary knowledge and the information needed, she let it sit in her mind for a while and allows the idea flow organically. She also mentioned that these ideas come to her when she is not sitting on the computer or she is at some place and the idea pops into her head when she is sitting alone in quiet. Once that idea comes, she immediately gets excited and pours her full energy into creating that art piece. She doesn’t like rushing herself into this. She likes to take time to come up with the base idea and let the art take over to express her mind.

She came across VOSAP Art from Heart contest from one of the social media platforms. She feels happy that the internet is being the useful tool to look for an opportunity like this and to see so many contests happening in which she could take part. She is glad to know that VOSAP is educating people and spreading awareness about Disability in such creative ways. She said VOSAP gave her the opportunity to explore her creative side a little more and also gave her the chance to educate herself about Specially Abled People. She is deeply inspired by the work done by VOSAP. We got an interesting perspective in her feedback about the virtual art gallery, she said, “It was very inspiring to see how each person thinks differently and to see their creativity and mental ability even though the theme was same for all”
