From Struggle to Strength: Swathi’s Story of Independence

Meet Swathi, a determined young woman from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, who today serves with pride as a Postal Assistant in the Department of Post, Government of India. But behind her confident professional journey lies a story of perseverance, courage, and the transformative power of the right technology.

Growing up, Swathi studied in a regular school alongside her sighted peers. From her very first years of education, reading was her greatest challenge. Through primary school, through her undergraduate years pursuing BA LLB, she was unable to read independently. Every page, every textbook, every lesson required someone else’s help. It was a silent struggle she carried for years. Everything changed when she began her Masters in Labour Law.

It was during this time that Swathi learned to use a computer, and with it, a whole new world opened up. She could access online content freely, study on her own terms, and for the first time, feel truly in control of her learning. Then came another turning point. Someone introduced her to an application called Kibo by Trestle Labs one of VOSAP’s Assistive Technology partner, a tool capable of reading non readable material including images and handwritten content. Intrigued, she downloaded it. A notification appeared about a subsidy program. She clicked, she applied, and she received her App through VOSAP’s support. That App never left her side.

Today, Swathi’s job involves writing correspondence and responding to letters, many of which are handwritten and in Tamil, her regional language. What once would have been an insurmountable barrier is now handled with complete independence. She reads every letter, responds promptly, and performs her duties without relying on anyone else.

“I am completely independent in that perspective,” she says, and in those words lives an entire journey.

Swathi is deeply grateful to Voice of SAP for making this device accessible through a subsidy, recognising that this single intervention reshaped the trajectory of her professional life. Her story is a quiet but powerful reminder that independence is not a privilege. It is a right. And with the right tools, there is no limit to how far one can go.
